Justice 58 – The Fast God Chooses

WHAT IS JUSTICE 58?

Justice 58 is a shared spiritual practice rooted in Isaiah 58 and the ancient Christian tradition of the Friday Fast.

It is not a program.
It is not a fundraiser.
It is a weekly rhythm of worship, justice, and community.

Justice 58 invites us to practice a fast that doesn’t just change our bodies,,but reshapes our way of life.

WHY “58”?

Isaiah 58 describes the kind of fasting God desires:
A fast that loosens injustice.
A fast that feeds the hungry.
A fast that shelters the vulnerable.
A fast that forms us into more humane people.
God calls this “the fast I choose.”

THE PRACTICE (SIMPLE + VOLUNTARY)

Each Friday, those who feel led are invited to do two things:

1. Fast the noon meal
As an act of devotion to Christ crucified
And as resistance to the consumerist spirit of our age

2. Redirect the cost of that meal
Toward Justice 58, supporting tangible needs in our community

This practice is:
  • voluntary
  • gentle
  • sustainable
  • rooted in love, not obligation

WHAT DOES JUSTICE 58 SUPPORT?

Funds given through Justice 58 are used locally and pastorally to:
  • assist with rent and utilities
  • provide food and clothing
  • help with car or home repairs
  • respond to emergency needs

This is justice with faces, not abstractions.

WHY FRIDAY?

From the earliest centuries, Christians marked Friday as sacred time — a weekly remembrance of the Cross.

Fasting on Friday connects us to:
  • the suffering love of Christ
  • the historic Church
  • a shared rhythm of restraint and generosity

We remember the Cross not only with words, but with our lives.
