BAPTISM

Immersed in Christ. Raised into New Creation.

Baptism is more than a religious ritual or simply a public symbol.

It is an embodied yes to Jesus—a sacred participation in His death, resurrection, and new creation life.

In baptism, we enter the water identifying with Christ, and we rise declaring that our lives belong to His way, His kingdom, and His love.

Baptism does not make us beloved. It awakens us to the life and love already revealed to us in Christ.

 

 

Jesus entered the waters of baptism and heard the voice of the Father:

“You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:11

Before Jesus performed a miracle, preached a sermon, or accomplished His mission, He was named Beloved.

That matters.

The Christian journey does not begin with earning God's love. It begins by learning to live from it.

Baptism gives that truth an embodied expression.
We enter the water.
We are immersed.
We rise again.
And we begin learning what it means to live our lives in Christ.

MORE THAN A SYMBOL

At Word of Life, we believe baptism is symbolic—but it is not merely symbolic.

Christian faith is embodied.

God meets us through ordinary things: water, bread, wine, touch, community, prayer, and presence.

In baptism, water becomes a sacred sign of our participation in the life of Jesus.

Paul describes us as being:
“Buried with Him by baptism into death…so we too might walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:4

Baptism is not simply remembering something Jesus did.

It is stepping into His story.

DYING. RISING. LIVING NEW.

Baptism tells the story of Jesus and gives us the pattern for our own lives.

We go beneath the water with Christ.
We rise with Christ.
We learn to live resurrection life here and now.

That means leaving behind the ways of fear, hatred, rivalry, greed, violence, exclusion, and self-centeredness—and learning the way of:
Love.
Peace.
Mercy.
Forgiveness.
Justice.
Generosity.
Reconciliation.

Baptism points us toward New Creation.

A NEW ALLEGIANCE

To be baptized is to make a public declaration:

JESUS IS LORD.

Our deepest allegiance is no longer given to fear, culture, politics, success, possessions, or the expectations of others.

We choose the way of Jesus.
The way of the cross.
The way of enemy-love.
The way of forgiveness.
The way of peacemaking.
The way of self-giving love.

Baptism is not only believing something about Jesus.
It is choosing to follow Him.

BAPTIZED INTO A PEOPLE

Baptism is personal, but it is never private.

We are baptized into Christ and welcomed into His Body—the Church.

You are becoming part of a community learning together how to live the way of Jesus.

We worship together.
We gather around the Table together.
We pray together.
We serve together.
We grow together.
We keep following Jesus together.

Because this journey is better together.

 

FOLLOWING JESUS

Jesus Himself entered the waters of baptism.
Matthew 3:13–17

PARTICIPATING IN HIS STORY

In baptism, we identify with Christ's death and resurrection.
Romans 6:3–5

DECLARING JESUS IS LORD

Baptism is a public declaration of our allegiance to Jesus and His kingdom.
Acts 2:38–41

WALKING IN NEWNESS OF LIFE

We rise from the waters to live the resurrection life of Christ here and now.
Romans 6:4

JOINING THE COMMUNITY

Baptism welcomes us into a people committed to following Jesus together.
Galatians 3:27–28

 

You do not have to understand everything.

You do not have to have everything together.
You do not have to reach some imaginary level of spiritual maturity.

Baptism is not graduation.

It is a beginning.

It is responding to the invitation of Jesus:

“COME, FOLLOW ME.”

We enter the water loved.
We enter the water held by grace.
We enter the water in Christ.

And we rise to spend the rest of our lives discovering what that means.
